Arlington Garden Design GardenWise on HGTV's Curb Appeal

J. Mark White, ASLA, of Arlington, VA Garden Design Firm GardenWise, Inc., Creates Exclusve for HGTV Garden Design Projects

J. Mark White, ASLA, president of Arlington, VA-based Garden Design Firm Gardenwise, Inc. appears in HGTV's Curb Appeal on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 12:30PM/ET. The episode features White's exclusive for HGTV landscape and hardscape designs. Please visit the GardenWise blog for more information and for before and after pictures of the project.

In this episode, White creates a more classic look for the homeowners who wanted to put their own stamp on their home with an open and welcoming approach. He replaced the dated and uninspired entrance with a bold and broad open staircase that leads directly to the front door. By adding a small landing at the top of the first staircase, the homeowners were able to add a bench to create an intimate and gracious seating area.

The staircase continues to a new front door, and a new flagstone porch and stair treads that are highlighted by a decorative wrought iron railing White designed, which adds sophistication and elegance to the home. White also created a shade garden, that includes a lot of woodland planting. Other design elements include additional hardscape features and new retaining walls, additional landscaping, flanking piers, and new decorative lighting.

Gardenwise, Inc. created, designed, and installed all of the landscape, hardscape, stonework, garden accents, lighting, and custon ironwork featured in the program in its entirety, and owns the rights to all the work seen in this episode

Oprah.com features television documentary Solar Town USA

Oprah.com Features Television Documentary Solar Town USA

Oprah.com featues TV film Solar Town USA in its feature on the greening of small town America.  Solar Town USA,
about the legacy of America's very first solar town, Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, is directed by filmmaker Brian Kosisky, recipient of the 2008 Gracie Award for Outstanding Documentary.  Kosisky provides profound insight into the history one American town whose citizens not only ended a century of flooding by taking bold steps to relocate its downtown district, but also created the very first solar village in the United States.  Daryn Kagan, creator and host of DarynKagan.com, serves as host and co-producer of the film.

Story excerpt:

"Now, more 30 years after the town installed its first solar panel, filmmaker Brain Kosisky decided to feature Soldiers Grove in his documentary
Solar Town USA . "It is an inspiring story of how the residents took something negative—severe flooding—and made something positive out of it: rebuilding their town from scratch and creating America's very first solar town," Kosisky says.

The documentary, hosted and co-produced by former CNN anchor Daryn Kagan, features the ups and downs the community went through while switching to solar and what it's like to maintain solar technology for three decades. "They are optimistic yet down-to-earth," Kosisky says. "While they are all proud of their town and the sustainable solar elements, they admit that some of the systems are no longer working at peak performance. Right now, the state of Wisconsin is studying the buildings to see how the systems can be improved."

"Much like the story of Soldiers Grove, a natural disaster almost wiped Greensburg, Kansas, off the map in May 2007 . . . Kosisky also featured Greensburg in Solar Town USA . He says there are many lessons from Soldiers Grove that Greensburg can incorporate into its rebuilding efforts."Keep it simple, plan for the systems' upkeep, allow upgrading to be affordable and educate the citizens on the best use of the new systems," Kosisky says."

DC Landscape Architect J. Mark White in LOWES 2010 Trend Story

J. Mark White, president of Washington, D.C.-area-based GardenWise, Inc., discusses water feature trends for 2010 with LOWES.

LOWES is known for their widely read and popular trend feature stories, and for this month, White discusses upcomingwater feature  trends, how to best install high-end features to blend with a home's landscape, and his designs work that is more affordable to his DC-area clients in today's economy.

Story Excerpt:

"Staying affordableStory
The increased cost-consciousness of consumers also has affected water feature trends. “The economy has indeed affected the sizes of the water features we are designing and installing as some clients are downsizing to more self-contained features that are less expensive to install and require less maintenance,” says J. Mark White. He adds that for a more structured, formal layout this stand-alone feature may be set into a patio space with a central spout or gurgling urn that spills into a seat-height basin."
